Addressing Invitation Envelopes

envelope etiquetteDo not use nicknames or abbreviations even for the street address except for Mr., Mrs., Dr., Jr. and for military rank like Gen., Col.

envelope etiquetteInstead of using the phrase, "and family," write the first names of the children below their parents' names.

envelope etiquetteThe outer envelope is addressed by hand - never with sticker. The outer envelope is used for complete mailing address and the guest's full name followed by the street address as shown below:

Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
1234 Happy Street
Anywhere, California 90210

envelope etiquetteThe return address should be on the envelope back flap. This may be pre-printed by the invitation printer but never use a sticker.

envelope etiquetteOn the inner envelope, do not include the guest's first names or address but do include the children's names who are invited to the occasion as shown below:

Mr. and Mrs. Doe
William Paul, Maria Frances

envelope etiquettePrint more invitations than you think you will need. It is embarrassing to find out that you have omitted a family member or friend or maybe you'll need at add a last-minute guest to the guest list.

envelope etiquetteWhen writing the envelopes, set a timer to remind yourself that an hour has pasted. Get up and stretch, walk around, take a break before setting down to write more envelopes. Take a break every hour or two take help prevent "writer's cramp".

envelope etiquetteA light box is an invaluable tool when trying to see your guidelines through the envelopes.

envelope etiquetteYour caterer will need the final head count at a specified time. Send out your out-of-town invitation 6-8 weeks before the event. Send out in-town invitations 4-6 weeks before the event. The RSVP date should be 1-2 weeks before the caterer's specified head count date.

envelope etiquette Check to make sure you have the correct zip code. The USPS web site has a zip code look-up section (http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp)
