
Crocheted Book Worm
6 yards knitting worsted
crochet hook – E, F, or 00
2 glue on eyes, glue, ribbon or bow
Chain a 12” long piece. In 2nd ch from hook, make 3 dc; make 3 sc in each of the remaining chains, leaving 6” un-worked, end with a sl st. Twist finished piece to resemble a worm. Glue eyes and bow on 3 dc (head)

Winter Garden
Not for young children. Children must be supervised when handling the bluing.
Soak a small chunk of coal over night in water. Place coal in glass bowl (such as a large flower bowl.) Cover coal with salt. Add a drop or two of liquid bluing and red food coloring. Set in warm place and watch it grow.

Crochet Finger Puppets (Frog, Pig, Lion) by Craft Yarn Council of America

Materials Needed:
left-over worsted-weight yarn
H (5mm) crochet hook
yarn needle, or #16 tapestry needle
odds and ends of felt
Chain 17.
Row 1: Work 1 sc into 2nd chain from hook and each chain across. There are 16 single crochet. Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: Work 1 single crochet into first stitch and each stitch across. Chain 1, turn.
Row 3-18: Continue to work even in single crochet for 16 rows more.
Row 19: Work 1 single crochet into first stitch, work 2 single crochet in next stitch (increase made) *work 1 single crochet in next stitch, work 2 single crochet in next stitch*, repeat between ** 6 times more. There are now 24 single crochet. Chain 1, turn.
Row 20: Work 1 single crochet into first stitch and each stitch across, There are 24 single crochet. Chain 1, turn.
Rows 21-33: Continue to work even in single crochet for 12 rows more. On the last row, end row by cutting yarn 12” from work and pulling yarn through loop on hook.
Finish by referring to finishing directions for puppet being made (below).
For The Frog:
Working top of frog’s head, with yarn needle and 12” tail of yarn, thread through half of the stitches. Gather tightly, forming one hump over eye. Repeat with other half of stitches. Sew 1 stitch with yarn between gathers. With remaining yarn, overcast or weave seam together on back of puppet.
Face Details: Using paper punch, cut 2 pink felt circles for mouth. Cut two 1/2 ” diameter blue felt eyes, then two slightly smaller black ones.

With a crochet hook, work 1” of chain stitch for each foot. Securely sew on all felt pieces to frog’s face and feet using the photo as a guide.
For The Pig:
Work top of pig’s head, with yarn needle and 12” tail of yarn, thread through all stitches on top. Gather top of head tightly and secure. With remaining yarn, overcast or weave seam together on back of puppet.
To Make Hair: Cut 35-4” strands of fine yellow thread. Sew them to top of puppet by tying at 3 spots across the pig’s head. Sew 1” bangs in center. Cut two 3/8” diameter white felt eyes, two 1/4 ” diameter black eyes, and two 1/8” diameter brown nostrils.

Securely sew on all felt pieces to pig’s face, using photo as guide.
For The Lion:
Working top of lion’s head, with yarn needle and 12” tail of yarn, thread through all stitches on top. Gather top of head tightly and secure. With remaining yarn, overcast or weave seam together on back of puppet. With contrasting color and yarn needle, loop yarn around head, Cut two 5/8” diameter gold felt circles for ears; two 3/8” diameter light green eyes; two 1/4 ” diameter black eyes; and one 3/8” diameter black tip of nose.

Use two miniature white pom-pom balls for nostrils. Securely sew all felt pieces to lion’s face, using photo as a guide.

Knit Finger Puppets (Frog, Pig, or Lion) by Craft Yarn Council of America
Materials Needed:
leftover worsted-weight yarn
#8 (5mm) straight knitting needles
yarn needle, or #16 tapestry needle
odds and ends of felt
Instructions:
Cast on 18 stitches.
Row 1: Knit across row.
Row 2 (right side row) Knit across row.
Row 3: Purl across row.
Rows 4-21: Work in Stockinette stitch (knit right side rows, purl wrong side rows) for 18 rows. Last row worked is a purl row.
Row 22: (right side row) Knit 1, increase in each of next 6 stitches (increase made by knitting into front and back of each stitch), knit 4 stitches, increase in each of next 6 stitches, knit 1. There are now 30 stitches.
Rows 23-39: Continue to work in Stockinette stitch (knit right side rows, purl wrong side rows) for 17 rows. Last row worked is a wrong side row.
Bind off all stitches. Finish off by cutting yarn 12” from work and pulling yarn through loop left on needle.
